Unique and Unusual Finds

Postby PinkDiamond » Thu Aug 20, 2009 10:37 pm

I thought it would be fun for us to post the unique and unusual gems we come across here so everyone can ogle them, so please add to this thread for us whenever you find something odd. :D

I'll kick us off with these spectacular specimens:

"Kenya is where the highest quality Chrome Tourmaline is found. We have never seen, however, colorful 'confetti'-like flashes of color in Chrome Tourmaline from Kenya or anywhere else..."

"Iolite is the name for gemstones fashioned from the mineral Cordierite.

One of the unusual varieties of Iolite is called 'Bloodshot' Iolite...."

If the Blarney Stone were to fall and break, they'd be left with Blarney rubble.

How's this for an incredible find?! A fully formed emerald crystal encased in a beautiful quartz crystal. WOW!!!

I just love Ron Ringsrud's site, and his Colombian emeralds are without a doubt the finest; and I'm pretty sure most of the guys will also enjoy his affinity for exotic cars. Enjoy!!

Yes, it's absolutely SPOOKtacular!!

His Something Wicked design originally published in Jewelry Artist Magazine October 2007, and he notified me that there was something wrong with the link I posted, and although I checked it last night, it isn't working today, so here's a different one that will hopefully work:

He also has a fabulous Afghan Indicolite Tourmaline, cut by Roger Dery, in the July section (I think... maybe it was August?) that's real eye candy and leaves me drooling all over my keyboard. Enjoy!!

Thanks for the updated link, but I couldn't find anything about that photo. What kind of stone is it?

Jeffrey said it's Tanzanian Zircon, that the rough was originally purchased from Hilmar Bosch, and the finished weight is 15.15 ct.

This might just be the ultimate in unique and unusual:

High-priced luxury phone comes from outer space

"Canadian-based luxury mobile phone maker, Mobiado is paying homage to NASA's Pioneer 10 spacecraft with a sleek, limited-edition mobile phone..."

So, how many are you getting?!

This is fabulous! I want it for Christmas, so y'all start pooling your money.

From AGTA eprism:

The Winter Palace among Bonham's offerings

"Bonhams & Butterfields will hold its annual holiday auction of Natural History in Los Angeles. Amid the crystal specimens and faceted stones are several fine examples of lapidary art. The most stunning is The Winter Palace, an illuminated music box made of rock crystal quartz, diamonds and aquamarines. It was designed to resemble a Russian onion-domed palace tower and was created under the direction of the German lapidary artist, Manfred Wild..."
