Fuel is selling for A$1.75 per litre in bush.
thats per litre not gallon.
aussie dollars converts to US $ 1.26 per litre
How much is that in gallon price ?
My mate is on way to boulder opal fields around Winton and was going thru longreach but has been cut off by flood waters.
Have enclosed pictures of trip to Winton last year.Patrik and i drove 8,000 kilometers around opal fields Winton ,Quilpie and Yowah.took 3 weeks and was so relaxing..Lot of these low areas now under water from heavy rains we just had.

pump pain and rain

Postby mauibuck » Sat Apr 08, 2006 9:31 am

You are paying just over $5/gal US. The current price here on Maui is $3.25/gal US. Price on the US mainland is about $2.40-$2.75/gal http://tonto.eia.doe.gov/oog/info/gdu/gasdiesel.asp

Petrol was about $4/gal US when I was touring the bush a year ago Dec. I didn't go outback because my 20 year old Hiace camper van had a real love for repair shops. 3 heads and 5 head gaskets in about 10,000 km and never figured out what the problem was.

last dec we meet young japanese couple driving into desert in old hi ace van,it was 40 degrees plus,,we warned him how dangerous it was for him and wife, but he didnt understand ,just had 4 litres water with him.....hope he made it out alright, but you can die thirst in less than 20 hours out there when its hot..but heard no word so they must have been ok..

Travel smarts

Postby mauibuck » Sun Apr 09, 2006 9:42 am

Those Japanese tourists must have been insane or terminally stupid. I did a bit of reading on survival in the outback before I left Hawaii. Before I left Brizzie, in my campervan I had two radios, CB and UHF, cell phone, a weeks worth of food and water, 3 truck size batteries (electric/gas fridge), two tanks propane, 2 green lasers, two spare tires, many maps, compass, mirror, spare belts, hoses, flashlights, plus a bunch of other stuff. All that just to get from Brizzie to Steve Irwin's farm. (That's about 40 km for those who don't know.)

Just kidding. All that was just for running in the bush which might be a bit of overkill but I was never left wanting for anything....except a decent engine and transmission. The stretched Hiace pop-top was perfect for one person or two. Slept better than in my bed at home and the scenery out the picture window changed every morning. I refused to drive at night so never tested the bull bars. Saw plenty of live and dead roo. Had one wild Wallaby get into the camper with me and demand more nacho cheese chips. Thought the damn thing wanted to sleep with me it was so friendly. However, it was just a very skilled beggar, and really cute.

For anybody thinking about venturing off Highway 1 Downunder, read this and many similar pages.

Mate sounds like you had great time..are you sure Wallaby, small kangaroo.didnt take your wallet?? their good at it!!
You were well prepared,no over kill when you hear of how many people die in outback.
Years ago we also saw guy in VW driving from lightning ridge to Winton,a few thousand km ,with his wife and young child..he was from europe and had no idea of the dangers..this was also in summer can you imagine how easy to have disaster.
Your leads are good for anyone travelling in bush.. cheers wayne
